During the middles ages Venice was the richest city in Europe. The wealth came from  the trade with the Orient. The luxury consuming was enormous and the Venetians dressed extravagant and had glamorous homes.

The well known glassmaking in Murano came to life in 1291 when the glassmakers in Venice were relocated to Murano due to the risk of fires it was to have glassworks in the city among the wooden buildings. The glassmakers of Murano developed  and refined many technologies for making glass and held a monopoly on high-quality glassmaking for centuries.
